Bitcoin Ignites Despite $116 Million Coldcard Hack
Bitcoin prices rebounded on Monday, August 3, rising to over $64,000 despite news of a significant hack that resulted in the loss of over $100 million' worth of digital currency. According to Coinbase data from TradingView, the world's most valuable cryptocurrency climbed to its highest point near 3:30 p.m. EST, representing a modest gain of roughly 2.9% since earlier in the day when it fell to approximately $62,200.
Analysts offered different explanations for this upward movement. Terence McMenamin, CEO and cofounder of Techdollar, attributed the increase to 'improving macro sentiment' and growing optimism around U.S. crypto regulation, rather than a single catalyst. He noted that investors have become increasingly optimistic about the possibility that the Federal Reserve could shift toward a more accommodative policy in response to softening economic data.
McMenamin also referenced the CLARITY Act, legislation that would outline the jurisdiction of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over digital currencies. He stated that many institutional investors have been explicit about clearer regulatory rules being a prerequisite for deploying more capital, so each credible headline suggesting progress on the legislation has the potential to bring sidelined investors back into the market.
Market expert Tim Enneking offered a different take on the matter, attributing the small move up to 'some mildly positive news with respect to the US-Iran 'war' and a very positive start to the week on Wall Street due to solid earnings reports.' Jeff Anderson, managing director at STS Digital, pointed out that Bitcoin's move higher tracks other risk assets, with the NASDAQ rebounding nearly 2% after last week's washout.
