Bitcoin Japan Bets Big on AI Economy, Invests $60 Million Across Sectors
Bitcoin Japan Corporation has made significant investments in various sectors of finance, including Bitcoin, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. The company's journey began as an apparel business, Marusho Hotta, founded in 1861, but it transformed into a Bitcoin-and-AI investment vehicle in 2025.
The company announced a ¥9.7 billion ($60 million) funding in July, which included a defined allocation for purchasing Bitcoin capital. According to Phillip Lord, Representative Director, President and CEO of Bitcoin Japan, the infrastructure is operational, with custody, multi-signature governance, J-SOX controls, and legal and accounting opinions on classification and treatment already built.
Bitcoin Japan has invested in positions in SpaceX and humanoid robotics developer Figure AI, while also preparing for a Bitcoin treasury strategy and exploring upstream rare earth exposure. The company sees rare earths as a strategic part of the AI economy, particularly given China's dominance of rare earth refining and Japan's reliance on imports.
Lord emphasized that the investment in SpaceX is not a short-term trading return, but rather an expectation that it will play a crucial role in the infrastructure buildout for the AI value chain. He also stated that the position in Figure AI aligns directly with their own Robotics-as-a-Service strategy in Tokyo.
