Bitcoin Leads Crypto Surge as 'Debasement Board' Takes Hold
Crypto markets experienced a notable surge last week, with Bitcoin, XRP, and gold leading the charge. The 'debasement board' label was applied to this move by quant trading firm Wintermute, as they noted that it was one of Bitcoin's best weeks since March 2024.
The firm's weekly market update highlighted the stark contrast between assets outside the fiscal complex and those priced off it. While Bitcoin surged 23.78%, XRP rose 40%, and gold increased by 5.45%, the S&P 500, Russell 2000, and Nasdaq all fell.
The report attributed this move to a combination of factors, including the Treasury's announcement of doubling long-end bond buybacks and a record $2.7 billion in shorts being liquidated across Bitcoin's price range from $63,000 to $79,000.
Wintermute also noted that the sequencing of ETF flows played a critical role in this move, with BTC ETFs taking in $1.92 billion and ETH ETFs adding $693 million. The firm emphasized that this structural sponsorship was essential for the advance, as it provided a crucial leg to support the breakout.
Regulatory news also contributed to this surge, with four consecutive sessions of announcements from Washington landing before the week-closing White House crypto meeting. Wintermute argued that the regulatory story has now become independent of the Clarity Act's progress and is moving on its own clock through the SEC and CFTC.
