Bitcoin May Gain Independence from Equities as Stock Shorts Hit Record Highs
Analysts are reevaluating Bitcoin's (BTC) role in global markets as short positions across American stocks reach record highs. According to XWIN Japan, a contributor to CryptoQuant, the surge in short interest is not indicative of bearish bets, but rather hedge funds stacking defensive positions while maintaining their long exposure.
The firm noted that hedge fund gross leverage has climbed to 293%, alongside record short exposure on the S&P 500 and elevated days-to-cover readings. This setup could impact Bitcoin's behavior as it has historically tracked equities during panics, but began to shift in 2025.
XWIN sees Bitcoin potentially turning into a hybrid asset, still tied to macro liquidity yet more capable of moving on its own. If future conditions bring Fed easing, a weaker dollar, and renewed ETF inflows, Bitcoin could become 'a secondary liquidity destination rather than simply a correlated tech-like asset.'
