Bitcoin Miners Abandon Crypto Mining for Lucrative AI Workloads
Bitcoin miners are shifting their focus from cryptocurrency mining to artificial intelligence (AI) workloads as data centers become increasingly lucrative. According to Coin Bureau, the shift comes due to AI's ability to generate significantly higher revenue per unit of electricity consumed.
Coin Bureau estimates that AI can produce up to 25 times more revenue per kilowatt-hour compared to cryptocurrency mining. This has led many major Bitcoin mining companies to repurpose their existing facilities for AI data centers, with some signing contracts worth tens of billions of dollars.
One such company is IREN, which has contracted $4 billion in AI capacity for 2026 and reported significant revenue growth from its AI Cloud Services. CleanSpark has also expanded into AI-ready data center infrastructure, leasing a site that represents $6.6 billion in contracted revenue.
The shift towards AI could reshape the competitive landscape for Bitcoin mining, with remaining miners facing increased pressure to optimize energy costs and hardware efficiency.
