Bitcoin Miners Abandon Ship for AI Data Centers Amid Price Decline
TeraWulf and Hut 8, two prominent Bitcoin mining companies, have recently signed massive deals to lease their facilities as AI data centers. The agreements are worth a combined $19.6 billion over 20 years.
The shift in focus from cryptocurrency mining to AI computing is driven by the increasing difficulty of mining and the falling price of Bitcoin. Mining companies like Core Scientific, which went bankrupt last year, have struggled to maintain profitability due to rising costs and decreasing revenue.
TeraWulf signed a 20-year lease agreement with Anthropic worth approximately $19 billion. Hut 8 announced a long-term lease worth $9.8 billion to build an AI data center in Texas, leasing 352 MW of server space and power capacity to an undisclosed major client for 15 years.
The mining companies' former focus on cryptocurrency mining has not been able to keep pace with the increasing difficulty of mining and the falling price of Bitcoin. As a result, they are now turning their facilities into AI data centers, which can utilize the existing infrastructure and power grid connections.
