Bitcoin Miners' AI Pivot Pays Off as HPC Contracts Reprice the Market
The pivot from Bitcoin mining to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) has proven to be a savvy move for some companies, as their stock prices have more than doubled in the past year. Companies like TerraWulf (WULF), IREN (IREN), and Cipher Digital (CIFR) have benefited from this shift, while others like MARA Holdings (MARA) have seen their shares fall by 40% over the same period.
The decline in demand for Bitcoin has led to a decrease in hashprice, with it dropping from $63 per petahash per second (PH/s) in July last year to around $31.80 per PH/s today. This has made it unprofitable for some miners to continue production, resulting in the Bitcoin network's hashrate decreasing by 21%.
However, companies that have secured AI and HPC contracts are trading at a premium, with a cumulative value of $70 billion in such deals as of the first quarter. The market has repriced these companies, with miners like Riot Platforms (RIOT) announcing large contracts worth billions of dollars.
