Bitcoin Miners Diversify into AI Compute with Long-Term Lease Deals

Riot Platforms has signed a long-term data center lease agreement with Anthropic, giving the Bitcoin miner another route into AI and high-performance computing.

The deal, which covers 191 megawatts of critical IT capacity at Riot's Rockdale campus, carries total revenue potential of up to $16.1 billion if extension options are exercised.

This move shows that miners are diversifying their operations beyond block rewards and is part of a larger shift in the industry towards power monetization platforms.

The agreement highlights the value of Riot's infrastructure assets, which can be repurposed for AI workloads. Unlike Bitcoin mining, where revenue depends heavily on BTC price, network difficulty, and fees, long-term compute leases create more predictable contracted revenue.
