Bitcoin Miners Diversify into AI Compute with Riot-Anthropik Lease
Riot Platforms has entered into a long-term data center lease agreement with Anthropic, marking another step in the diversification of Bitcoin mining companies beyond crypto. The deal includes a 20-year lease for 191 megawatts of critical IT capacity at Riot's Rockdale campus, which carries total revenue potential of up to $16.1 billion if extension options are exercised.
This move is part of a larger trend in the sector as miners seek to leverage their power assets and expertise in high-performance computing. AI companies like Anthropic require significant amounts of power and data center capacity, making them natural partners for miners with existing infrastructure.
Riot's agreement highlights the value of its Rockdale campus, which has been a key asset for the company. The deal also underscores the potential for long-term contracted revenue in the AI compute market, which can provide more predictability than the cyclical nature of Bitcoin mining.
