Bitcoin Miners Earn $240K per Block: The Electricity Business Behind Crypto Mining
Cryptocurrency mining is the process of adding new blocks to a proof-of-work blockchain such as Bitcoin. The network pays whoever adds them in newly issued coins.
Today, one Bitcoin block pays a 3.125 BTC subsidy plus fees, about $240,660 at a spot price of $77,012 (CoinGecko). Mining is essentially an electricity business.
A top-end machine can cover its power bill below roughly 10.7 cents per kWh, but this rarely pays for home mining on retail electricity due to the high cost of equipment and maintenance.
