Bitcoin Miners Face $50B Funding Gap in AI Market Push
Bitcoin miners targeting the AI data-center market face a significant funding gap, according to a recent report by VanEck. The investment platform estimates that publicly traded miners pursuing artificial intelligence and high-performance computing opportunities require an estimated $50 billion in near-term funding, with long-term capital needs reaching roughly $221 billion.
VanEck argues that investors should increasingly value miners based on gross energized power rather than Bitcoin production, reflecting the sector's rapid shift toward AI infrastructure. The report highlights companies such as Cipher Mining Inc., Hut 8 Corp., and TeraWulf Inc., which have signed significant AI leases but trade at over 10 times their gross energized power.
The asset manager notes that companies missing delivery targets are punished with sharp re-ratings, making funding and execution crucial. VanEck expects many AI-focused miners to eventually resemble data-center real estate investment trusts or become acquisition targets, further emphasizing the importance of financing and project execution.
