Bitcoin Miners Face Scrutiny as Investors Demand Execution on AI Infrastructure
Bitcoin miners are facing increased scrutiny as investors become more selective about which companies can execute on their plans to transition into AI infrastructure. Bernstein, a financial research firm, recently issued sharply different ratings for two miner stocks, CleanSpark and MARA Holdings, based on their progress in signing commercial AI contracts.
CleanSpark has already secured a $6.6 billion, 20-year lease at its Sandersville facility, while MARA has yet to land its first commercial AI contract despite pursuing the same pivot. This distinction led Bernstein to maintain an 'Outperform' rating for CleanSpark with a price target of $24, while downgrading MARA to 'Market-Perform' with a target of $17.
Research from Blocksbridge Consulting found that investors have become less enthusiastic about miners announcing AI pivots, with average same-day stock price gains falling from 24% in early deals to around 10% for recent ones. The study examined 25 AI and HPC transactions announced by bitcoin miners between June 2024 and August 2026.
The market is now waiting to see which companies can actually convert their thesis into signed, revenue-generating leases, rather than just announcing plans. With stock reactions to new AI announcements decreasing, the remaining unconverted miners have a shrinking window to close the gap before investors stop giving them credit for the story alone.
