Bitcoin Miners Left Behind as Crypto Market Surges

Bitcoin miners have been missing out on the recent crypto rally as other areas of the market surge. In late August, Bitcoin's price climbed by around 25% to reach highs near $80K, with spot ETFs attracting significant capital and exchanges experiencing increased trading activity.

Meanwhile, public Bitcoin miners offloaded between 28,000 and 32,000 BTC during the first half of this year, worth approximately $1.78 billion at the time. This selling was largely used to fund a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, with miners committing over $70 billion to these sectors.

The numbers tell a clear story of capital rotating into risk assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted roughly $3.8 billion in net inflows over three weeks through early September, including a single-day surge of $731 million. Stablecoin allocations within crypto portfolios dropped 22% during the rally period, and the total crypto market cap swelled to nearly $2.7 trillion.

Exchanges benefited directly from the heightened trading activity, with volumes climbing across major platforms. A particularly telling signal is that USDT dominance showed a potential 'death cross,' where its 50-day moving average fell below its 200-day moving average, suggesting stablecoin dominance is weakening.
