Bitcoin Miners' New Gold Rush: Power, Not Hash Rate, Is the Valuable Asset
The traditional formula for evaluating Bitcoin mining companies is no longer applicable as they pivot towards AI and high-performance computing (HPC). The new units of valuation are shifting from EH/s and BTC to MW and GW, focusing on energized capacity and grid interconnection arrangements. Investors are now interested in how much power a company controls, how much has been contracted to AI customers, and how much has already been delivered.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) projected that global data center electricity consumption will nearly double by 2030, with data centers accounting for nearly half of the growth in U.S. electricity demand between 2024 and 2030. This shift highlights the importance of power as a scarce asset connecting the two industries.
Bitcoin mining profit margins are becoming increasingly thin due to rising network hash rate and mining difficulty, diluting revenue available to each individual mining machine. Miners like Core Scientific are transforming their business models by monetizing power capacity through long-term data center leases, generating more predictable cash flows.
The transformation is not complete, with significant capital expenditures still required to convert existing facilities into AI infrastructure. However, the results demonstrate that a mining company's financial center of gravity can shift rapidly as they repurpose their assets for high-demand AI workloads.
