Bitcoin Miners Redirect Capacity for AI Upgrades at Significant Cost
Public Bitcoin miners have reduced their realized hash rate by 56 EH/s (15%) in the first half of the year, according to a report by TheEnergyMag. This decrease is attributed to upgrading AI infrastructure, with most of the capacity not entirely removed but redirected towards this purpose.
In the second quarter, total disclosed revenue from HPC and artificial intelligence increased by 52% compared to the first quarter. Some companies redirected about 10% of their capacity to AI infrastructure, resulting in revenue from HPC colocation and cloud services surpassing that from declining mining operations for the first time.
However, the transition is costly. TheEnergyMag estimated that companies spent more than $30 billion on infrastructure transformation, with corporate capital expenditures exceeding combined revenue by nearly 15 times for six infrastructure providers reporting regular high-performance computing revenue.
