Bitcoin Miners' Rush to AI Computing Power May Backfire
Bitcoin miners are shifting away from their core business and rebranding as 'energy infrastructure platforms' or 'digital infrastructure companies built on electricity, land, and computing power.' This transformation is driven by a shift in revenue structure, with corporate market capitalizations surpassing valuations when they were purely Bitcoin mining companies.
The past year has been marked by a survival crisis for top listed Bitcoin miners. As the Bitcoin block reward halving forced miners to adapt, some chose to continue mining and accumulating coins, while others modified their hardware to turn to High-Performance Computing (HPC) and diversify their business.
However, the market liquidation event on October 10 triggered a downward cycle that has not yet fully recovered. The current Bitcoin price is nearly halved compared to last October's high, making selling Bitcoin after mining unprofitable.
The shift to AI computing power seems natural for miners wanting to find a profitable way out, as they can transform their hardware infrastructure without starting from scratch. Almost the entire listed mining sector has collectively changed direction, with changes in revenue structure over the past few quarters reflecting the scale of this transformation.
