Bitcoin Mining Companies Abandon Ship for AI Gold Rush
Bitcoin mining companies that invested heavily in powerful computers to mine Bitcoin are pivoting towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing due to declining rewards. The value of Bitcoin has dropped significantly since its peak in October 2025, from around $124,000 to approximately $80,000. However, the shift away from Bitcoin mining may be permanent, as companies have invested heavily in infrastructure that is expensive to refit for AI and high-performance computing.
Riot Platforms recently signed a $9 billion, 20-year compute deal with Anthropic, while TerraWulf and Enegix are also transitioning their focus towards AI. Industry analysts predict the industry pivot will continue even as the price of Bitcoin has risen in recent days. Wolfie Zhao from The Energy Mag believes many public miners will continue to wind down their Bitcoin mining hardware in the coming quarters.
Refitting crypto mines for AI is a costly process, and some companies have had to sell their Bitcoin holdings to fund the switch. Bitdeer's chief strategy officer, Haris Basit, said the company will continue mining Bitcoin, believing many operators would pursue a dual-purpose model.
