Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Hits New All-Time High at 148.2 Trillion
Bitcoin's mining difficulty has reached a new high of 148.2 trillion in its final adjustment for 2025, with projections indicating it will rise to 149 trillion on January 8, 2026.
The metric measures the computational challenge of adding new blocks to the blockchain ledger and is adjusted every 2,016 blocks, approximately two weeks, to maintain consistent block production rates across the network.
Average block times currently sit at 9.95 minutes, slightly below the 10-minute target that triggers difficulty increases, but rising mining difficulty requires miners to deploy more computing and energy resources to remain competitive in the capital-intensive sector.
