Bitcoin Mining Facility's Record Water Leak Sparks Regulatory Fears in Oklahoma
A severe water leak at a Bitcoin mining facility in El Reno, Oklahoma, has sparked outrage and raised questions about regulatory oversight. The site, operated by Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC, leaked an estimated 3 to 3.8 million gallons of water into the ground during a prolonged drought.
The leak, which occurred around August 28, caused significant disruptions in the city, with schools and public buildings forced to shut down due to low water pressure. The city's mayor confirmed that taxpayers would not be liable for the costs associated with the leak, as the site was metered, and the operator will be charged for every gallon leaked.
The facility has been operating without proper permits, having received a stop-work order in June 2023. Despite this, operations continued, raising concerns about how local governments oversee industrial water consumers. An administrative hearing is scheduled for September 14 to determine further action against the company.
