Bitcoin Mining Tycoon Leads Private Push for Manned Mars Flyby

Chun Wang, co-founder of F2Pool and a prominent figure in Bitcoin (BTC) mining, has announced that he will command SpaceX's first crewed flyby of Mars. The mission is expected to travel beyond the Earth-Moon system, swing past Mars, and return home.

The two-year voyage will be split into two segments: a weeklong commercial flight around the Moon, followed by the interplanetary journey. Wang has purchased seats on both missions and hopes that the trip will show the public that Mars is a reachable destination for humans.

Wang's decision to fund the mission was motivated by his desire to keep Mars on SpaceX's agenda. He believes that government competition will drive progress towards the Moon, but he has little confidence that Mars will be reached within his lifetime without private pressure.

F2Pool, which Wang co-founded in 2013 with Shixing Mao, is one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools, holding a hashrate share above 11%. Despite the excitement surrounding Wang's space venture, analysts note that the immediate effect on mining will be limited, as hashprice, power contracts, and Bitcoin's price remain more significant factors.

Wang's experience with space travel is not new; he previously commanded the Fram2 mission in 2025, which was the first crewed flight to orbit directly over Earth's poles. The SpaceX missions are expected to take place without a specific launch date set.
