Bitcoin Mining Tycoon Leads SpaceX's First Crewed Mars Flyby
Bitcoin mining tycoon Chun Wang has taken his passion for space exploration to new heights by purchasing seats on two upcoming Starship missions. The Chinese-born entrepreneur and co-founder of F2Pool will command SpaceX's first crewed flyby of Mars, a venture that he hopes will show the public that the Red Planet is within reach.
The two-year voyage will travel beyond the Earth-Moon system, swing past Mars, and return home. Before embarking on this interplanetary journey, Wang will join a weeklong commercial flight around the Moon with Dennis and Akiko Tito, passing roughly 125 miles above the lunar surface.
This is not Wang's first foray into spaceflight; he funded and commanded the Fram2 mission in 2025, which made history as the first crewed flight to orbit directly over Earth's poles. By investing in SpaceX's Starship program, Wang aims to apply pressure on governments to prioritize Mars exploration.
The deal has sparked interest among analysts, who see it as part of a broader trend where early crypto founders are redirecting capital into adjacent fields such as artificial intelligence and aerospace. However, experts note that the immediate impact on Bitcoin mining is limited, with hashprice, power contracts, and BTC price remaining more relevant to the sector.
