Bitcoin Near $70K as Crypto Market Surges $2.38 Trillion
Crypto market capitalization surged 8.1% to $2.38 trillion on August 19, led by Bitcoin's approach towards $70,000 and Ethereum's sharp outperformance.
The rally was initially triggered by a bond-market intervention, with the US Treasury Department announcing an increase in liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government debt, calming inflation concerns and heavy government borrowing. However, falling yields alone do not explain Bitcoin's move towards $70,000 or Ethereum's nearly 20% daily gain.
A derivatives-driven mechanism played a key role, with $2.99 billion in liquidations turning the rally into forced buying. The process can become self-reinforcing, where exchanges close undercollateralized positions, pushing prices higher and forcing subsequent clusters of shorts to unwind.
Ethereum's 19% jump was particularly notable, as it outperformed Bitcoin and other major assets, indicating that risk appetite had moved beyond the flagship cryptocurrency. The rally's breadth suggests a broader repricing of crypto risk rather than a simple short squeeze.
