Bitcoin Nears $80,000 as Strong ETF Inflows Drive Rally
Bitcoin's price surged on August 21 to its highest level since May, nearing $80,000. According to Coinbase data from TradingView, the cryptocurrency climbed to $79,500, a 9% increase from its intraday low of approximately $73,000 and 24% from Wednesday's low of $64,100.
Analysts attribute the rally to various factors, including strong inflows into Bitcoin-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and the liquidation of short positions. William Stern, founder of Cardiff, notes that 'the buyback and the Clarity Act got it moving,' while Terence McMenamin, CEO and cofounder of Techdollar, emphasizes that 'Bitcoin climbing to roughly $79,500 isn't really a crypto story, it's a liquidity story.'
Brian Huang, cofounder of fintech firm Glider, focuses on the impact of this week's Treasury announcement: 'When the US government buys long-dated treasuries to artificially dampen rates, it pushes investors towards assets like BTC and gold.' Thomas Perfumo, global economist for Kraken, is keeping an eye on ETF inflows to see if there's follow-through.
