Bitcoin Nears 'Golden Cross' as Strategy's Complex Capital Structure Comes Under Scrutiny
Bitcoin has staged a strong rebound, reclaiming key long-term technical indicators and sparking market speculation about the end of its multi-month downtrend. As the price continues to rise, Bitcoin is approaching the formation of a 'golden cross,' a pattern that signals strengthening long-term bullish momentum.
A golden cross occurs when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average, with both lines maintaining an upward trajectory. Historically, this pattern has preceded further price increases in each instance it formed. However, it is essential to note that a golden cross is a lagging indicator, appearing only after prices have already rebounded significantly.
Strategy (MSTR.US), the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, holds approximately 840,000 Bitcoins, representing about 4% of Bitcoin's ultimate supply. However, its complex capital structure implies that the actual value of these assets is lower than suggested by the company's holdings. The company has significant debt and preferred stock obligations, which reduce the net asset value per share attributable to common shareholders.
Strategy's annual financing costs total approximately $1.7 billion, with ongoing interest payments on debt and dividends on preferred shares totaling about $1.736 billion. This means that the company needs to supplement its liquidity through various means, including selling Bitcoin. As of August 10, Strategy held reserve assets worth approximately $58.67 billion, including Bitcoin and cash reserves.
