Bitcoin Nears Pivotal Level at $68,300, This Week's Close May Determine Fate
Bitcoin's price is hovering near $68,000, a level that has historically separated mid-cycle corrections from prolonged bear markets. According to data, this week's close could determine whether the sell-off deepens or stabilizes.
In prior cycles, including 2018 and 2022, a weekly close below the 200-week exponential moving average (EMA) followed by a failed retest of the level triggered 'bearish acceleration,' meaning steeper and more sustained price declines. If Bitcoin closes the week below $68,300, it could repeat this pattern.
The 200-week EMA has been seen as a long-term price floor, but last week's drop below $60,000 broke through both the 200-week EMA and simple moving average intraday. However, the weekly candle recovered.
Not all indicators point to further losses, though. Bitcoin's Mayer Multiple - the ratio of price to the 200-day moving average - has dropped to approximately 0.6, according to CryptoQuant data. Historically, readings below 0.8 have coincided with strong long-term buying opportunities.
Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, called the 0.6x reading 'historically one of the best buy signals in Bitcoin history,' while acknowledging further downside is possible.
