Bitcoin on Thin Ice Ahead of Fed Decision, Analysts Warn of Volatility
Bitcoin's price movement is under scrutiny as Bitfinex analysts warn that it could test either $82,000 or $76,000 after the Federal Reserve's decision. The Fed's September 15-16 meeting will be a major catalyst for Bitcoin's price action, with key range boundaries identified at around $77,200 and $82,100.
The concentration of short exposure above $82,000 has increased by 43%, creating a potential liquidation pool of up to $1.95 billion if BTC breaks through the upper boundary. This could lead to forced buying and add momentum to a breakout.
On the other hand, leveraged long positions are concentrated around $75,000-$76,000, so a sustained move below that area could trigger forced selling and accelerate the decline. Bitfinex notes that the Fed decision could bring enough volatility to test both zones.
The interest-rate decision is only part of the equation, with updated economic projections also providing additional information about the Fed's expected policy path. Recent comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller show why the meeting matters, as he stated that a rate increase could be appropriate if incoming August data failed to show further improvement in inflation conditions.
Bitfinex is also watching real Treasury yields and energy prices, with higher real yields making non-yielding assets less attractive and an oil shock keeping inflation pressures elevated and limiting the Fed's room to ease policy. For Bitcoin, the bullish case remains intact if demand absorbs selling and BTC clears $82,000 with sustained volume.
