Bitcoin Opens May at $78K, Traders Eye Monthly Candle Open
Bitcoin (BTC) kicked off May at $78,450, up about 2.4% from the previous day's close. This marks a significant opening for the cryptocurrency, with traders closely watching monthly candle opens as structural reference points.
The daily volume reached a high of $33.8B, while the total market cap stood at $1.565 trillion, making Bitcoin the largest asset on CoinGecko by a considerable margin.
Looking back at April, Bitcoin spent most of the month consolidating in the $75,000 to $80,000 range before breaking above $77,000 in the final week and holding onto that level until the end of the month. The April monthly candle closed positive, which some traders are using as a reference point for May.
While Bitcoin's gain was modest compared to other tokens within the same CoinGecko trending window, such as Unibase (up 56%), SkyAI (up 21%), and Monad (up 7.3%), its $36B market cap increase still represents a significant absolute dollar shift.
