Bitcoin Options Market Signals Bearish Outlook Amid Record Low Upside Expectations
According to Glassnode, an on-chain analytics firm, the Bitcoin options market is signaling a bearish outlook. The skew between call and put implied volatility has reached record lows, indicating that very few investors are positioning for a Bitcoin rally.
Downside implied volatility remains relatively low, but upside implied volatility has fallen to 23%, suggesting a lack of confidence in a near-term price increase. This extreme low in upside volatility highlights a market that has largely abandoned hopes for a significant breakout.
The options skew measures the difference in implied volatility between call and put options. A negative skew typically indicates bearish sentiment, as traders are paying more for downside protection. Glassnode's data shows that while downside volatility is not particularly elevated, the extreme low in upside volatility suggests a cautious and bearish stance in the market.
Historically, record lows in upside volatility have sometimes preceded sharp price movements, as markets can become complacent. However, the current skew suggests that traders are more focused on protecting against downside risks than capturing upside gains.
