Bitcoin Owners Reap What They Sow: Irreversible Losses Mount

Eight Bitcoin owners have lost significant amounts of cryptocurrency due to careless mistakes. One of them is James Howells, who threw out his laptop's hard drive in 2009, containing an estimated 7,500-8,000 BTC worth around $578 million today.

Stefan Thomas, a programmer, stored his private key on an encrypted Ironkey USB drive but lost the password. He has exhausted eight of ten guesses and is no longer trying to access his 7,002 BTC, valued at approximately $540 million.

A Missouri farmer reportedly accepted a large bitcoin refund in 2010 from a European vendor for veterinary medicine. The farmer, named Samantha, lost control of her 100,000 BTC, worth around $7.7 billion today.
