Bitcoin Pauses at $80,000 as ETF Inflows Hold Key to Next Move
Bitcoin briefly touched $79,500 before entering a consolidation phase near its highs. The cryptocurrency's surge was driven by a combination of geopolitical risk, U.S. long-term Treasury yields, and cryptocurrency regulatory developments. Last week, the U.S. Treasury Department announced expanded bond buybacks, which led to lower long-term yields and improved risk appetite.
The rally gained momentum with a short squeeze in the derivatives market, where large short positions were liquidated in a cascade as the price broke through $70,000. This triggered forced buying that pushed prices higher in a self-reinforcing cycle, with over $1 billion in short positions liquidated in the first hour alone.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw five consecutive trading days of net inflows totaling $1.92 billion from August 17 to 21. Institutional capital began flowing in earnest after breaking above $70,000, with BlackRock's IBIT accounting for the bulk at roughly $1.33 billion.
However, profit-taking sell orders and leveraged long position liquidations converged over the weekend, causing a pullback. The market is now waiting to see if ETF inflows persist and how cryptocurrency regulation evolves.
