Bitcoin Payments Decline in El Zonte as Government Holdings Rise
A Bitcoin Core developer's recent visit to El Zonte revealed that Bitcoin payments have become rare at local restaurants, contradicting earlier expectations of increased adoption.
The developer, Jon Atack, reported that after paying for lunch in El Zonte, he was told it was the first Bitcoin payment the establishment had received all month. Staff stated that Bitcoin payments were previously common but are now 'practically nonexistent'.
This observation aligns with national survey data showing the lowest reported use of Bitcoin for payments since the country adopted it as legal tender in 2021.
