Bitcoin Price Sensitive to Short-Term Liquidity Conditions, Says Lepard
Veteran investor Lawrence Lepard has called Bitcoin (BTC) a 'liquidity smoke alarm,' suggesting that its price is more sensitive to short-term liquidity conditions than long-term currency debasement. He made this comparison with gold, which he described as 'pure debasement insurance.' Lepard explained on the Honest Money podcast that despite growing M2 money-supply growth, Bitcoin has stayed weak because system-wide liquidity is currently tight.
Lepard stated that Bitcoin's price decoupling from M2 growth came down to how each asset is used. 'Bitcoin to me is a little bit of a liquidity smoke alarm,' he said. It has a tech component and can be seen as a shiny object, whereas gold buyers tend to take a long-term view.
Lepard expected that the situation would change once the Federal Reserve was forced into another round of money printing, which he believed could happen within 16 to 18 months. He pointed out that during the COVID-19 crash in March 2020, gold responded quickly to the Fed's emergency stimulus, while Bitcoin stayed flat for months before skyrocketing.
