Bitcoin Price Sinks Amid Quantum Computing Fears
Bitcoin's price has dropped by 30% due to fears of quantum computing, according to Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments. Edwards attributes this 'quantum discount' to anxiety over Bitcoin's reliance on ECDSA signatures, a type of cryptographic lock that current computers can't crack, but quantum computers could potentially break in the future.
The 'quantum discount' has been steadily increasing since June 4, when it stood at 28%, and now stands at 30%. Edwards warns that if developers don't prioritize post-quantum security upgrades by the end of 2026, Bitcoin's price could fall below $50K by 2028.
Edwards believes that a credible post-quantum solution could trigger a swift double-digit price recovery as the quantum discount narrows. He calls on Bitcoin Core developers to prioritize post-quantum security upgrades and has put a timeline on the stakes, warning that without meaningful progress, the market will start to lose credibility.
