Bitcoin Price Slips Below $77,000 Amid CLARITY Act Uncertainty
Bitcoin's price has fallen below $77,000 after a rally above $79,000 on Monday, as traders watch the Senate's procedural vote on the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act. The vote is crucial because it determines whether the Senate can move forward with legislation intended to create a regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
The CLARITY Act aims to split oversight of digital assets between the SEC and CFTC, which supporters argue would reduce regulatory uncertainty for the crypto market. However, Democrats are still seeking additional changes to the bill, including revised ethics language and stablecoin provisions concerning banking sector concerns.
A 'yes' vote today would allow the Senate to open consideration of the bill and consider amendments, but it does not guarantee that the CLARITY Act becomes law. Regulatory clarity could still emerge even if the bill does not pass, according to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who notes that the SEC and CFTC are prepared to publish rulemaking.
The market is also affected by macroeconomic concerns, including higher oil prices and inflation worries ahead of an expected Federal Reserve interest-rate decision. The 10-year Treasury yield has approached 5%, which has historically challenged Bitcoin's price.
