Bitcoin Price Slumps Below $78,000 Amid Ongoing Market Volatility
Bitcoin's price continued its downward trend on Tuesday, dropping below $78,000 for the third time in as many days. The cryptocurrency had briefly traded above $79,000 over the weekend but struggled to maintain momentum, instead falling back to nearly flat levels at the start of September.
The decline triggered a wave of liquidations, with over $79 million in long positions wiped out and total liquidations reaching $264 million across the broader market. Analysts expect bitcoin to trade sideways in the near term as market participants await key US economic data, including the August Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) releases.
The upcoming inflation prints arrive on the heels of a stronger-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report, which highlighted persistent resilience in the US labor market. If inflation data reflects an unexpected uptick or fails to cool significantly, it would give the Federal Reserve further leeway to pursue a rate hike at its upcoming policy meeting.
Higher interest rates elevate yields across traditional risk-free assets, such as US Treasuries, suppressing investor appetite for speculative and non-yielding assets like bitcoin. Consequently, a tighter monetary outlook would likely constrain bitcoin's upward momentum, keeping prices range-bound or pressuring the asset lower in the near term.
