Bitcoin Price Soars on Short Squeeze and Regulatory Relief
The Bitcoin price has surged by 14% in just three days, from $62,821 on August 17 to $72,071 by August 20. This significant gain has pushed the BTC price against its 200-day EMA and has had a ripple effect across the broader market.
The rally is not limited to Bitcoin alone; major altcoins have responded positively as traders regain appetite for risk. However, the main driver of this surge appears to be the derivatives market, where short sellers were caught leaning heavily towards another leg lower.
A sizeable short squeeze occurred as the BTC price climbed, resulting in a total of $3.30 billion in crypto liquidations over the latest 24-hour period, according to CoinGlass data. This has led to an ugly feedback loop for those positioned on the wrong side, with forced buying pushing prices higher and creating another round of liquidations.
The timing of this rally coincides with a more supportive regulatory backdrop. The SEC's proposed rulemaking framework, 'Regulation Crypto Assets,' aims to establish federal offering pathways, while President Trump's meeting with crypto executives has pushed Congress to accelerate passage of the CLARITY Act.
