Bitcoin Price Stuck at $80,000: Middle East Tensions and US Treasury Confidence Key
The price of Bitcoin has been stuck around $80,000 for weeks, and experts say it needs a catalyst to break through. According to James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, one of two conditions must be met: either Middle East tensions ease or confidence in U.S. Treasuries declines.
The cryptocurrency market is being pulled between speculation over U.S. monetary policy and geopolitical risks. The recent strong U.S. employment data led to a pullback from the $82,000 level. Market participants are now focused on the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) release on September 11 and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 15-16.
The 'currency debasement trade' is re-emerging, with investors buying hard assets to hedge against eroding currency value due to concerns over U.S. fiscal health and Treasury bond purchases. A break above $80,000 would require either a resolution of the Iran situation or a further deterioration in confidence toward U.S. Treasuries.
