Bitcoin Price Surge Wipes Out $197.75M in Crypto Futures Liquidations
A surge in Bitcoin's price above $76,000 triggered a wave of short closures across cryptocurrency futures markets, resulting in over $197.75M in liquidations.
The majority of these losses came from short positions on Bitcoin and Ethereum, with automated liquidation engines on exchanges closing positions when margin fell below a threshold.
This self-reinforcing loop occurred as traders who had bet against Bitcoin at lower prices faced margin calls as the asset's price rose. Each forced buy-back added upward pressure, which in turn triggered further liquidations.
