Bitcoin Price Volatility Looms as $9.6 Billion Expiry Clears
The largest single-day options expiry in recent months is taking place today, and the market is pricing in the associated friction. Bitcoin's price currently sits at $63,800, hovering just below its max pain level of $64,000 as dealers manage delta exposure into settlement. Ethereum trades around $1,890, also near its own max pain threshold.
A total of 149,000 BTC options are expiring today with a put/call ratio of 0.28 and a notional value of $9.6 billion. Meanwhile, 435,000 ETH options expire with a put-call ratio of 0.63, max pain at $1,850, and a notional value of $830 million.
With more than $10.4 billion in crypto options cleared during this single session, the market is bracing for potential volatility as dealers rehedging and open interest reset. The lack of clarity from the previous FOMC session and the absence of a strong catalyst for crypto contribute to the uncertainty surrounding price movements.
