Bitcoin Purists Clash with Blockchain Neutrality
David Schwartz, former Ripple CTO and principal architect of the XRP Ledger, has fired back at Bitcoin purists who opposed the failed BIP-110 soft fork. The fork aimed to limit non-financial data on the Bitcoin network but was met with resistance.
The collapse of the fork led to a flood of deliberately heavy blocks being submitted to the network, demonstrating the market's rejection of on-chain censorship.
Schwarz argued that on a public blockchain, the opinion of third parties about others' transactions 'doesn't matter at all'. He pointed out that traditional monetary transfers represented an absolute minority of space in block 962266, which was dominated by NFT inscriptions and custom scripts.
Schwarz warned against attempting to dictate how a blockchain can be used, saying it would transform it into something indistinguishable from a traditional bank. He noted that the network's economic equilibrium remains intact as long as transactions pay proportional fees.
