Bitcoin Quantum Fix Threatens to Spark Blocksize Wars 2.0

Bitcoin developers are facing a potential security dilemma after Samson Mow, founder of Jan3, warned that rushing to implement post-quantum cryptography on the network could introduce new vulnerabilities.

Mow's concerns stem from the fact that post-quantum signatures would be dramatically larger than current ones, up to 125 times bigger according to former Bitcoin developer Jonas Schnelli. This expansion would consume more space in each block, reducing the number of transactions the network can process.

The disagreement centers on urgency, with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and chief security officer Philip Martin urging the industry to prepare for quantum computing threats immediately. Mow argues that a hasty migration to post-quantum encryption would create fresh attack surfaces rather than eliminate them, labeling the prospect 'Blocksize Wars 2.0'.

Mow believes that quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's encryption remain at least a decade away, and therefore sees no need for immediate action. He emphasizes the importance of research on potential defenses without deploying unfinished solutions now.
