Bitcoin Rallies on Debasement Trade and Regulatory Support
The price of Bitcoin has surged by about 22% since Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's comments on August 20th that the US would 'at least double' planned purchases of outstanding 10- to 30-year debt.
This sudden rally pushed the most popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, briefly above $80,000 for the first time since May. Bloomberg's Ryan Weeks attributes this momentum to renewed chatter about the debasement trade and dollar selling.
Weeks notes that there are two main drivers behind the surge: Scott Bessent's intervention in the bond market, which revived talk of Bitcoin's anti-inflationary properties, and more regulatory support. The Clarity Act has stalled, but a meeting between Donald Trump and industry executives last week saw him endorse the sector and encourage lawmakers to pass the legislation.
The industry is optimistic about this new regulatory push, with some predicting that Bitcoin could reach a new record by the end of the year. However, Weeks remains cautious, stating 'I'm not sure about that just yet.'
