Bitcoin Rally Sends Mining Stocks Soaring Past AI-Focused Counterparts
The recent Bitcoin rally has breathed new life into some of the most struggling mining stocks. According to BlocksBridge Consulting's Miner Weekly newsletter, a 23% rise in Bitcoin's price over the past week outpaced most AI-linked infrastructure stocks.
Three beaten-down Bitcoin mining companies - Canaan, American Bitcoin, and Cango - saw their stock prices surge between 41% and 67%. In contrast, CoreWeave rose around 21%, Nebius gained 17%, and IREN advanced 15%. Some miners with a heavier focus on AI and HPC (high-performance computing) remained flat or declined.
Blocksbridge attributed the rally to three key factors: the US Treasury Department's announcement that it would at least double its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasury securities, renewed regulatory optimism following a White House meeting with crypto executives, and a sharp short squeeze following Bitcoin's breakout. Over $1.6 billion in crypto positions were liquidated over 24 hours.
Bitcoin mining-focused stocks outperformed companies that pivoted towards AI and HPC. This resurgence underscores how strongly Bitcoin's price can influence mining stocks, even as many miners have shifted their focus to AI and HPC infrastructure in recent years.
