Bitcoin Rally Spreads Across Crypto Market Amid Short Position Liquidations
Crypto prices are surging across the board, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP posting significant gains. The main driver behind this move is the liquidation of over $1 billion in short positions on Bitcoin within a 60-minute period.
This sudden surge caused a ripple effect, pushing other major cryptocurrencies to follow suit. When Bitcoin's price shot up by more than $4,400 in just 50 minutes, those who had bet against it saw their positions automatically closed out, forcing them to buy back the cryptocurrency at a loss, further driving up its price.
Ethereum and XRP are also benefiting from this trend, with Ethereum up nearly 4% to around $2,085 and XRP climbing 3.5% to $1.07. The sudden influx of money into crypto ETFs is also contributing to the rally, with BlackRock's Bitcoin fund, IBIT, leading the way with $143.6 million in new investments.
The shift in bond yields may be another factor driving the surge, as the US Treasury will double its bond buybacks starting September 9, causing long-term bond yields to drop sharply and making riskier assets like crypto and stocks more attractive by comparison.
