Bitcoin Rally Wipes Out $1.44 Billion in Short Positions
Crypto traders have witnessed a remarkable shift in sentiment over the past day, moving from fear to greed as the Crypto Fear and Greed Index surged to 62. This represents a 16-point increase from just one day prior, when the index stood at 46, firmly in 'Fear.' The sudden turnaround comes as Bitcoin's price surpassed $72,000, catching traders off guard who had been betting on another decline.
The shift is even more pronounced over a longer period. Just last week, the index was down at 29, but one month ago it stood at 25, placing the market in 'Extreme Fear.' The Bitcoin price has also seen a dramatic increase, reaching $72,868 before stabilizing around $72,465.
The rally began with Bitcoin below $65,000 on August 19, and was followed by other assets, including Ethereum and major altcoins. Crypto-related stocks also saw positive moves on the same day. President Donald Trump's renewed push for Congress to pass the CLARITY Act kept crypto policy in focus in Washington, but neither development alone explains Bitcoin's sharp rally.
The scale of losses among traders betting on lower prices helps explain why sentiment changed so quickly. A reported $1.44 billion was lost by these traders over the previous day's rally, with Bitcoin accounting for $861.06 million and Ethereum responsible for another $424.21 million.
