Bitcoin Red Team Races Against Time to Prevent AI-Powered Attacks
Bitcoin's open-source ecosystem faces growing security threats due to AI-powered attacks. The Bitcoin Red Team, formed as an emergency effort, is working around the clock to find and fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
The team consists of about 20 to 25 volunteers, including some pseudonymous members, who scan software built around Bitcoin to identify potential weaknesses. While they have found no issues with the Bitcoin protocol itself, their focus lies on applications, wallets, services, and other software that interact with it.
Calle, a member of the Red Team, said U.S.-based AI models often come with guardrails that limit their use in security-sensitive work. Chinese AI models, however, are used more frequently for this purpose due to their greater flexibility.
The Coldcard air-gapped wallet hack and other Bitcoin service attacks have pushed the team to move quickly. Calle believes attackers are already using AI to find vulnerabilities, but he avoids discussing their methods in detail to avoid giving malicious hackers ideas.
