Bitcoin Replicability Debate Heats Up with Ripple's CTO Weighing In
Ripple's Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz joined a heated debate about Bitcoin's replicability, arguing that copying its code doesn't replicate the network. The discussion began at Binance Blockchain Week, where CZ (Changpeng Zhao) and Peter Schiff exchanged views on gold-backed tokens and Bitcoin's utility.
Schiff stated that gold-backed tokens carry physical utility due to representing ownership of a scarce commodity used across industries. He claimed that Bitcoin derives its value from faith and has no practical use. In response, CZ said that physical gold is difficult to divide or verify without specialized tools, while Bitcoin can be transferred and verified instantly through the blockchain.
Schwartz challenged the premise by questioning how a new Bitcoin could be exactly the same as the original if it were replicated. He argued that a replica may copy Bitcoin's code but cannot replicate its network of users, miners, institutions, and real-time validation that give it its identity.
