Bitcoin Resilience Amidst AI Sector Dislocations and FOMC Uncertainty
Bitcoin defied the AI stock rout on Wednesday morning, rising by over 1% to $64,250 as markets waited for the Federal Reserve's rate decision. The price had dipped below $63,000 the previous day but quickly recovered above that threshold, even as Asian and semiconductor markets were battered.
South Korea's KOSPI index plummeted by more than 12%, with chipmaker SK Hynix shares tumbling up to 20% due to record quarterly earnings failing to meet investor expectations. In contrast, Bitcoin drewdowns during AI sector dislocations have been shallower than those of stocks exposed to AI infrastructure spending.
According to CME FedWatch data, there's a 68% probability that the Fed will keep its benchmark rate unchanged at 3.50-3.75%, with a 32% chance of a 25-basis-point hike. A hike would tighten financial conditions and strengthen the dollar, negatively impacting non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
Traders are cautious ahead of the FOMC meeting, which could redraw the risk landscape. The post-FOMC window is crucial for price discovery, with hawkish signals potentially pulling Bitcoin back to its lower end or testing the fragile $63,000 level. Conversely, a dovish hold could encourage upward movement.
