Bitcoin Rises on US Debt Levels Surpassing $40 Trillion
BlackRock's digital assets chief, Robbie Mitchnick, says Bitcoin's recent price movement is closely tied to America's rising debt levels. The U.S. federal debt has surpassed $40 trillion, and investors are increasingly looking at alternative stores of value as protection against fiscal pressure.
The Treasury Department reported that the federal debt on August 18 was $40.05 trillion, more than double the figure from 2017. Spending exceeds revenue, forcing the government to borrow heavily, with interest expenses becoming a significant burden. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that tax reductions passed over the last two decades have also contributed to the growing deficit.
Robbie Mitchnick stated that Bitcoin's behavior often recovers when confidence across markets is weak, and its longer-term performance can differ from traditional investments like stocks. He noted that investors are watching the future buying power of fiat money and looking at alternative assets like gold and Bitcoin as a store of value.
