Bitcoin Security Consortium Forms to Fund Quantum Defense Research
Nine major players in finance and crypto have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium to fund research on quantum computing defense for Bitcoin. The group, consisting of BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy, has pledged a combined $15 million over three years.
The funding will go directly to developers and researchers chosen by each member, without any direction from the consortium. The group emphasizes that it will not direct Bitcoin development or take positions on protocol changes.
The move comes as a response to the growing concern about the quantum risk to Bitcoin's cryptography. A potential fix would require coordinating changes across wallets, exchanges, miners, and users, which takes years. Currently, roughly 6.9 million BTC ($450 billion) sit in addresses that could be vulnerable if a quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography were developed.
